Earth Day Celebration
at Seneca Park Zoo

Diamond Packaging celebrated Earth Day by partnering with the Seneca Park Zoo on Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 10 AM to 4 PM to help kids plant trees and seeds for butterfly gardens.

Now in its ninth year, Diamond's Earth Day partnership with the Zoo is an ideal way to educate and inspire visitors about conservation. It is also an opportunity for Diamond to discuss its industry-leading sustainability initiatives.

TICCIT

Diamond employees helped kids plant trees as part of the TICCIT (“Trees into Cartons, Cartons into Trees”) program, an educational outreach program for school-aged children held every year to honor Earth Day and highlight the renewability and sustainability of paper and paperboard packaging.

Children were given a Colorado blue spruce sapling and soil, and instructed how to plant the sapling in a paperboard folding carton (which biodegrades over time) supplied by Diamond.

Recycling

Children were taught about the importance of recycling, including what can be recycled and how to recycle more. Diamond also promoted the latest Mixed Recycling program guidance, available from the Monroe County Department of Environmental Services (DES).

Unlike plastic, paper and paperboard is recyclable, renewable, and biodegradable. About 94% of the U.S. population has access to curbside or drop-off paper recycling programs (Source: AF&PA).

Paper and paperboard is the most recyclable substrate in the market. In fact, the paper recovery rate was 68% in 2021 (Source: AF&PA), and accounts for 66.5% of municipal solid waste (MSW) recovered for recycling in the U.S. (Source: EPA).

Butterfly Beltway Project

Diamond volunteers also helped children plant wildflower seeds (selected to work as habitat for native monarch butterflies) in a specially-designed, paperboard folding carton to coincide with the Seneca Park Zoo’s Butterfly Beltway conservation project.

The goal of the project is to add more gardens, inspire others to plant gardens, and reach more people about the importance of butterfly conservation.

How to Build a Better Package...
the Diamond Way

Diamond develops more sustainable packaging through creative design, material selection, and right sizing.

Folding cartons are manufactured utilizing recyclable or recycled paperboards (many FSC® certified), using 100% clean, renewable wind energy, and produced in a Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) and Carbon Neutral (Scope 1 and Scope 2) facility.

Plus, environmental benefits can be communicated through on-product labeling or smart tags.

100% Wind Energy

In 2007 Diamond committed to purchase clean, renewable wind energy for 100% of its electrical energy requirements, becoming one of the first U.S.-based folding carton suppliers to do so.

Carbon Neutral

In 2021 Diamond announced a multi-year commitment to purchase carbon offsets through Climate Action Reserve (CAR) to reduce its carbon footprint. Diamond facilities are now carbon neutral (covering Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions).

Zero Waste to Landfill

In 2014 Diamond achieved zero waste to landfill status, becoming the first U.S.-based folding carton supplier to achieve the distinction.
