Diamond Packaging Wins Three Awards in 2008 Premier Print Awards Competition
Rochester, NY – Diamond Packaging earned three awards in the 2008 Premier Print Awards Competition, the graphic arts industry's largest and most prestigious international printing competition.
The Premier Print Awards Competition is sponsored by the Printing Industries of America / Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF). Now in its 59th year, the competition recognizes excellence in print communications and rewards companies and individuals who produce the best in print media.
Competing against more than 4,200 entries from printing and graphic arts firms around the world, Diamond received Certificates of Merit for its 2008 corporate calendar, the L’Oreal USA / Matrix Biolage thérapies promotional cartons, and the Redken Duo Shampoo & Conditioner Caddy.
Michael Makin, president and CEO of PIA/GATF, notes, “Each year, the field of entries brings impressive work from some of the best printers in the world. Only a small number of companies receive any award. The craftsmanship and hard work of Diamond enabled them to produce an award winning piece in the face of some very stiff competition.”
Diamond’s corporate calendar is a popular promotional item given to customers and suppliers. This year's calendar introduces Diamond’s greenbox initiative – the company’s commitment to packaging solutions that are innovative and sustainable.
By thinking creatively Diamond was able to minimize paperboard and energy usage, yet still retain the popular three-month design. The overall presentation imparts unusual depth and distinction through innovative structural design, material selection, spot coating, foil stamping, and multi-level embossing.
Diamond reduced the overall calendar weight, which offered the most significant opportunity to conserve raw materials and energy, reduce greenhouse gases, and minimize discards.
Diamond eliminated a backer panel by printing one of the months on an insert which is placed in the three dimensional header. Diamond also re-sized the calendar pages and shipper to reduce their environmental impact.
The dimensional header features an embossed image of a seedling within a folding carton set against a multi-level embossed image of trees in the background.
The backers feature an image of a windmill and a wind energy logo, highlighting the fact that the calendar was produced using 100% renewable wind energy – a green energy source that provides the greatest environmental benefits.
Solid bleached sulfate (SBS) paperboard was chosen for the header and backer panels due to its performance characteristics and the fact that it is 100% recyclable. The shipper was produced utilizing Kraftpak®, a high-yield, low-density paperboard which offers a significant source reduction advantage compared to regular-density paperboard grades.
L’Oreal USA / Matrix, a leader in the professional hair care products industry, chose a green approach for the promotion of their Biolage thérapies line of products. Diamond delivered by creating packaging with sustainability in mind.
The gifts sets were produced utilizing Kraftpak®, a high-yield, low-density paperboard which offers a significant source reduction advantage compared to regular-density paperboard grades. The natural, unbleached packaging alternative is 100% recyclable and made from a renewable resource. It is also energy efficient and carbon-friendly on a per-carton basis.
Die cutting on the front panel leverages brand identity by allowing the products to show through. Perforated tags communicate pricing information at the time of purchase, yet can easily be removed prior to gift giving.
The colorful graphics were achieved by offset printing three special PMS colors and opaque white in-line with aqueous coating.
The cartons were produced using 100% renewable wind energy – a green energy source that provides the greatest environmental benefits.
Redken’s new Duo Shampoo & Conditioner Caddy sets incorporate a revolutionary split-level design that concurrently attracts consumers through its visual appeal and highlights the promotional offer.
The easy-to-assemble cartons were converted as a glued, single-piece structure and enhanced by offset printing four color process inks and silver metallic ink inline with UV gloss coating.
This year's winners were honored at the Premier Print Awards Gala on October 26, 2008 at the Chicago Marriot Downtown Magnificent Mile in Chicago, IL. In addition, all of the winners will be highlighted in the Premier Print Awards Annual, a supplement to the November 2008 issues of both Graphic Arts Monthly and Graphic Design USA magazines.
