Rochester, NY – Diamond Packaging won 10 awards in the 71st annual North American Paperboard Packaging Competition, the industry’s premier showcase for all that is new and outstanding in paperboard packaging design and technology. Awards were presented last month at the PPC Fall Meeting and Leadership Conference in Atlanta, GA.
The competition, sponsored by the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) and judged by a jury of packaging professionals, industry experts, and professors, is a celebration of the industry and its creative potential. It is also an affirmation of paperboard as the clear and intelligent choice for packaging in today’s eco-conscious world.
Diamond received recognition by winning four Gold Awards and six Excellence Awards. The total represents the highest number of awards Diamond has ever won in this competition.
Diamond won a Gold Award and an Eco Gold Award in the “Cosmetics” category for Elizabeth Arden's John Varvatos Artisan Acqua carton. The packaging features tightly registered offset printing with intricate embossing accents, creating a singular presentation that resurrects the lost art of craftsmanship, with a modern edge.
The carton was converted utilizing Clearwater Candesce® SBS paperboard and offset printed with four color process, metallic copper, teal, and brown inks, inline with Liquid Metal™ silver specialty UV coating, UV matte, and UV gloss spot coating. All paperboard components were manufactured using 100% wind energy.
Liquid Metal™ was applied on the top, front, rear, and side panels as an alternative to foil stamping. UV matte coating was applied over the embossed ‘sand’ pattern, contributing to the natural aesthetic of the Artisan Acqua carton. The UV gloss spot coating on the top panel and over the bottle on the rear panel provides a striking contrast to the overall matte finish surrounding it.
The multi-level embossed ‘sand’ pattern is inspired by Mediterranean beaches and perfectly complements the flask-like fragrance bottle, housed in handwoven rattan.
Diamond won a Gold Award in the “Pharmaceutical/Healthcare” category for Procter & Gamble’s Crest 3D White Luxe Whitestrips® carton featuring a trapezoidal structural design with multi-color printing and holographic foil stamping.
The carton was converted utilizing Clearwater Candesce® SBS paperboard and offset printed with three process colors, three custom colors, and opaque white ink, inline with UV gloss coating.
The custom-designed multi-layered, diamond-shaped holographic foil pattern on the front and top panels perfectly complements the trapezoidal graphic patterns and the carton’s shape to convey the sparkling essence of diamonds – reinforcing the benefits of the ultimate in consumer-grade teeth whitening products.
Diamond won a Gold Award in the “Self-Promotional” category for its 2014 calendar. The apple-themed calendar represents a natural evolution of Diamond's greenbox initiative and is a fitting tribute to New York, one of the nation’s largest apple producing states.
The vivid presentation features inline green technologies (e.g., soft touch, specialty effects coatings), UV gloss spot coating, foil stamping, multi-level embossing, debossing, and intricate die cutting. The innovative structural design allows the calendar to be hung with one lower panel or unfolded to reveal apple blossoms on the middle panels.
The calendar was converted utilizing Clearwater Candesce® SBS paperboard and offset printed with four color process inks, inline with an overall aqueous gloss coating, UV gloss spot coating, specialty effects pigmented coating, and DiamondTouch soft touch coating. Metal Magic provided all of the embossing dies.
Multi-level embossing and debossing the header creates a dramatic sense of texture and depth, while UV gloss spot coating (water droplets) and pearlized coating (leaves) provide contrast to the finish surrounding it.
Diamond won an Excellence Award in the “Cosmetics” category for Elizabeth Arden's Green Tea Yuzu carton.
The carton was converted utilizing Mohawk Loop Smooth White paperboard and offset printed with four color process and three PMS inks, in-line with UV matte and DiamondEmboss specialty coating.
DiamondEmboss coating enhances the embossed logo and text, and provides a striking contrast to the matte finish surrounding it.
The tightly registered multi-level embossing (yuzu citrus slices, flower petals, logos, text) beautifully complements the eye-catching graphics.
Diamond won an Excellence Award in the “Cosmetics” category for Elizabeth Arden's White Diamonds Gift Set (Mother's Day 2014).
The QuikSet™ carton was converted utilizing metallized polyester board and offset printed with transparent gold, transparent purple, transparent lavender, dense black, and opaque white inks, in-line with UV matte and UV high gloss coating. Exquisite dome-embossed round and pear diamonds add beauty and reinforce the White Diamonds brand.

The QuikSet™ carton was converted utilizing metallized polyester film on FSC-certified SBS paperboard and offset printed with transparent red, dense black, and opaque white inks, in-line with UV matte and UV high gloss coating. The UV matte spot coating on the lid provides a striking contrast to the high gloss red accents (logo, dimpled pattern) surrounding it. The multi-level embossed dimpled golf ball pattern on the lid reinforces the Michael Jordan brand as the ultimate in sport and style

The QuikSet™ carton was converted utilizing metallized polyester film on FSC-certified SBS paperboard and offset printed with transparent gold, dense black, and opaque white inks, in-line with UV matte and UV high gloss coating. The UV matte spot coating on the lid and base provides a striking contrast to the high gloss gold accents (logos, ribbed pattern) surrounding it. The multi-level, pebble-embossed basketball on the lid reinforces the Michael Jordan brand.
Diamond won an Excellence Award and an Eco Excellence Award in the “Cosmetics” category for Zotos Professional’s 180PRO Discovery Kits. The kits introduce groundbreaking technology that delivers a “180° turnaround for healthy hair,” and the extraordinary packaging – featuring a semi-circular structural design and metallized polyester board – reflects it.
The carton was converted utilizing Hampden Papers 1/2 Mil Bright Silver Metallized Polyester Film on SBS paperboard and offset printed with transparent purple (or pink), dense black, and opaque white inks, in-line with UV gloss coating.
The unique package incorporates a specially-designed sleeve that perfectly fits around an upper and lower thermoform tray to form a semi-circular structure. This design creates a physical property that allows the customer to perceive the brand tangibly – making a more direct connection to the brand messaging of “180° turnaround to healthy hair” and the product claim to “Repair up to 2 years of hair abuse.”
A scored rigid window wraps around the front and side panel, allowing the products to show through. The window creates a visible link between the packaging and the product, leveraging the brand equity of the bottles and logo.
The sleeve provides ample billboard space for branding, product information, and even a coupon to be used towards the future purchase of a Zotos Professional 180PRO full size product.
